NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/CNN) -- John Legend and Kelly Clarkson have put a 21st-century spin on the classic holiday song "Infant, It'due south Common cold Outside," which has been the subject of criticism for what some listeners see equally sexist or nonconsensual lyrics.
The new vocal, featured in Legend'south vacation album, "A Legendary Christmas: Deluxe Edition," changes the lyrics to the decades-sometime version, bringing a more modernistic band to the beloved phone call-and-response melody.
In contempo years, it'due south received some backlash for being insensitive, reports CBS2'due south Steve Overmyer.

In the original lyrics, written past Frank Loesser in 1944 and made famous by the pic "Neptune's Daughter" in 1949, the male singer seems to be insistently persuading his female guest to stay, despite her insistence that, "I've got to go away," and, "The answer is no."
In the era of #MeToo, those lines seem to many like definite denials of the male vocalist'south pleas of, "What's the sense in hurtin' my pride?" and, "Oh infant don't hold out."
Listeners in the 1950s may not have blinked an eye, but in a civilisation than at present focuses more on sexual consent, the lyrics seem problematic to some.
New Yorkers in Bryant Park seemed to welcome the new version.
"As opposed to the 1940s version that felt a little 'date rapey' - information technology'south probably the best way to put it," said Nathan Logsdon. "It's not quite as forceful on the male person side. I felt like I was giving her a practiced selection."
"I understand that sensibilities accept changed, but yous likewise accept to accept the perspective of what it was in the 1940s," said Scott Greenfedder. "I similar the old version considering it conjures up images for me, but I get a real chuckle out of this version."
"I never actually thought information technology was that bad growing up, and so the more I got to know it I was similar 'Oh this is bad,'" said Rachel Cool.
Others said they still adopt the original classic.
"You should larn from history - don't destroy it, just acquire from information technology," said Jim Padgett. "And the original song they had out there. In that location was nothing wrong with that vocal."
Instead of canceling the song altogether, Fable and Clarkson nowadays a fresh set of lyrics to the iconic jazzy melody. This time, the vocal sounds more like the parting of two lovers rather than a strange persuasion attempt.

When Clarkson sings, "I've got to go away," Fable returns with, "I tin can call y'all a ride." And guess what? Her driver's name is Murray and Legend wants her to text him when she's dwelling house safely.
"Text me when you get dwelling," Fable sings.
Just don't worry, he'south not shoving her out the door. It's obvious the two want to be together, but Clarkson just isn't feeling completely sure about staying the night and doesn't want to worry her family.
Legend brings upwards a skillful bespeak, though, when he sings, "Await, what are you lot still livin' home for?"
"I want yous to stay, it's not up to me," he tells her.
That'south right! And y'all know what else?
"It'southward your body and your choice," he tells her as she worries what her friends will think, echoing the cry of women's rights protesters on the decade.
Controversy Surrounds The Original 'Infant It's Cold Exterior'
WCBS-FM's Broadway Bill says the New York radio station has seen a handful of complaints over the terminal couple years.
"Older Americans say that's the manner adults deal with each other, but younger women are afraid and I empathize that," Broadway Neb said.
Not everyone's warming up to the thought of a new version.
"The Talk" co-host Sharon Osborne is chilly towards the new release. "Information technology's a piece of fine art... to change an innocent lyric, to what is it, 'your mind and your body?' What the hell are you on? That's ridiculous," she said during a discussion on the show.
And Deena Martin, Dean Martin'southward daughter, called Legend'south new lyrics "absolutely absurd."
"I call back what he'south done is he's stealing the thunder from Frank Loesser's vocal and my dad," she said on Practiced Morning Britain. "He should write his ain song if he doesn't like this one, but don't modify the lyrics. It's a classic, perfect vocal."
